Towards the end of 2024, we headed to the Far North for our third place-based wānanga with 4th Gen. Everyone was really excited to spend some time in the sun and learn about the environment mahi that 4th Gen does alongside their iwi, Ngāti Kuri.
We spent most of our time outdoors experiencing their kāinga, learning about the different housing initiatives being built for whānau members working and living in the area. Tammy Tauroa, centre director at Te Ara Whānui and co-chair of Ngāti Kuri shared her vast knowledge of developing papakāinga and the importance of approaching housing with a holistic understanding of the diverse needs of whānau, hapū and iwi. We were also lucky enough to be taken on a unimog along 90 Mile Beach, learn about the many pūrakau of Ngāti Kuri and be shown what it means to reclaim the skills of our tūpuna for future generations.
The manaakitanga we experienced in the Far North was second to none and we walked away in awe of the drive, passion and innovation 4th Gen and their whānau embodied.
