Our Research & Projects Our research projects are developed with and for communities, focused on supporting the intergenerational well-being of tangata whenua through the protection and nurturing of taonga (treasures).

Pūrangakura pursues transformative solutions for our whenua, te taiao and mokopuna in diverse areas including housing, education, environmental resilience and cultural heritage. Put simply, our work focuses on enhancing who we are and how we want to live as tangata whenua.

Urban Intergenerational Kāinga Innovations and Marae Ora Kāinga Ora are two projects focused on culturally responsive and sustainable housing for whānau, hapū, iwi and marae. In Generation Kāinga, rangatahi are co-designers and co-producers of innovative approaches to transform the lives of communities.

Commencing in 2025, Wai Ora Kāinga Ora is a major research project that strives to regenerate local waters and ecosystems through intergenerational, kāinga based solutions. Over four years, our Kaupapa Māori research team will work alongside eight Māori communities to co-design innovative, practical and sustainable water regeneration practices and respond to the challenges of climate change. The project received a highly competitive 2024 MBIE Endeavour Fund award.

This project builds upon our other successful community-led ecological projects, including Digital Twin: Ihumaatao.
