Pūrangakura is excited to share that we have been awarded Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) funding to deliver 'Whakamaru i te Rangatahi', a two-year research initiative focused on improving housing outcomes for Māori rangatahi and their whānau.
Māori continue to be disproportionately affected by the Aotearoa housing crisis, with many whānau living in damp, overcrowded, or insecure homes. Although recent legislative changes enabling minor dwellings create new opportunities, the process of building remains complex and difficult to navigate, particularly for rangatahi and whānau seeking affordable, intergenerational housing solutions.
Whakamaru i te Rangatahi will develop a practical, end-to-end model that supports whānau to move from aspiration to build, providing step-by-step guidance across financial planning, land feasibility, culturally grounded minor dwelling design, and streamlined build processes on both general title and Māori land.
Collaboration sits at the heart of this kaupapa, with Pūrangakura committed to working in partnership with whānau, hapū iwi and other stakeholders, to deliver practical solutions that support healthy, intergenerational housing outcomes for rangatahi Māori and their whānau.
Pūrangakura acknowledges the support from BRANZ and looks forward to working alongside our partners and communities in this research.
